Founded in 1984, the W.O. Smith School is a non-profit organization that provides high-quality music education to children from low-income families for 50 cents per lesson. Each year, nearly 400 children receive music instruction from a 100-member volunteer faculty comprised of individuals from all segments of the Nashville music community including studio and symphony musicians, college professors and private instructors. The school offers instruction in all band and orchestra instruments, piano, guitar and voice and provides instruments and music to students at no additional charge.

William Oscar Smith was a professor at Tennessee State University and a member of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. He always dreamed of a school where children from low-income families could have music instruction of the highest quality made availble to them. This school is a fulfillment of that dream.

Wynonna Judd will play herself on an upcoming episode of “Army Wives,” Access Hollywood can exclusively reveal.

The singer will appear on the May 16 episode of the Lifetime series, where she’ll perform two songs as part of a USO-style concert for the troops at Ft. Marshall in Charleston, South Carolina.

John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting will also be performing a song during the concert.

The series will return for its fourth season with an April 11 premiere, the first of 18 new episodes.

“Army Wives” airs on Lifetime on Sundays at 10 PM.

Below him, eight musicians serve as his amped-up house band while a dozen dancers practically leap out of their tight pants and pedal pushers. At center stage is a huge shoe, which another half-dozen revelers use as a trampoline, performing double somersaults in time to the music. The King looks down, smiling as if in approval of this spectacular union of two crucial elements--one past, one present--of Vegas show biz. Elvis Presley, meet Cirque du Soleil's Viva Elvis.

From his first concert series at the International Hotel in 1969 until his death in 1977, Elvis was Las Vegas. Glammed up in sequined duds that would make a showgirl or Liberace envious, he pleased his aging audience, singing his early hits that once had the musk of sexual revolt but by then were golden oldies. And while he redefined Sin City's notion of a headliner show, the town changed Presley as well. At the end, the kid from Tupelo, Miss., may have been more Vegas than Elvis.

The Strip has another king now. Since 1993, with the opening of Mystère, the Montreal-based Cirque has come to dominate Vegas entertainment with such theatrical extravaganzas as the water show O and the martial-arts epic Ka--pieces that in scope and technical éclat are to the typical Broadway show what Avatar is to the 1933 King Kong. In 2006, Cirque pulled off a Beatles homage, Love, but that was sedate stuff next to this audiovisual-balletic-acrobatic explosion from director Vincent Paterson and "director of creation" Armand Thomas. They've concocted an experience that's both symphonic and in every way fantastic.

Beginning and ending with Elvis '56 ("Blue Suede Shoes" to start, "Hound Dog" for the finale), the 90-min. show, now in previews before its official opening Feb. 19, sprints through Presley's youth, his first phenomenal success, his Army service, his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu, his movies and the Vegas years. This is hagiography, not biography; it's no warts, all wonder.

The wonder comes not just in the death-taunting circus feats--trapeze agility, high-bar gymnastics--that are the company's hallmark but also in the superb editing of Elvis clips (by Ivan Dudynsky) and the savvy sampling of the musical material (by Erich van Tourneau) that revises and refreshes the Presley oeuvre. No tribute show can touch this one in its level of sophistication and its power of evocation.

Got a Lot o' Livin' to Do

In Vintage Cirque style, Viva Elvis often soars into the symbolic, the oneiric. To suggest the star's closeness to his twin brother Jesse, who died at birth, the show offers, to a tender rendition of the ballad "One Night," a vision of two young men in James Dean--ish white T-shirts and jeans, executing soulful acrobatics, alone and together, on a guitar-shaped apparatus suspended in front of a starry night sky. At the end, one of the men--Jesse--falls off into the abyss.

There's plenty of vigorous terpsichore (this is as much a dance show as a circus show), but Viva Elvis can't stay earthbound for long. In the Army section, to the tune of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?," two figures on wires--a soldier abroad and his girl back home, holding a letter she's written him--execute a poignant pas de deux; they never touch until at last he grasps the letter and presses it to his chest. The Elvis-Priscilla courtship is staged with a man and a woman reclining on separate beds, then (to "Love Me") rising in sleep to meet their dream lovers on large airborne engagement rings in two complementarily sensual couplings. Cover the kids' eyes!

The very smart choice of songs covers both the canonical ("Heartbreak Hotel," "Jailhouse Rock," "Burning Love") and the merely fabulous ("Got a Lot o' Livin' to Do," which accompanies an ecstatic amusement-park bit with high-bouncing superheroes). Of course the climax is "Viva Las Vegas," with 40 Elvis impersonators and a dozen chorines filling Mark Fisher's staircased set and the Big E back onscreen, overseeing the riot of color and movement.

The real Vegas has had its profits pinched by the Great Recession lately. But luxe, energy, sexual threat and primal rock 'n' roll are back in fashion on the Aria stage, where Cirque is throwing its most joyous party ever--and where Elvis lives.

A beloved, universally known icon of American entertainment will be performing at the event of his lifetime this spring.

It is without question that Kenny Rogers is a living legend and this evening in Nashville, TN at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in front of the assembled media, the first details were announced for an upcoming television special worthy of his musical legacy – Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years.

However, this upcoming event is far more than just a music special, Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years, will be as star studded as any award show. It will be a rollicking celebration, filled with music and comedy from some of the biggest stars in the entertainment world performing, appearing and sharing stories about Kenny Rogers and his music.

Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Alison Krauss, Wynonna and The Oak Ridge Boys are just some of the early names already slated to appear on the show. The array of artists will be part of the performance, and a few will host different segments of the show travelling through Kenny's six decades of hits. 

Kenny Rogers: The First 50 Years will tape on April 10th, 2010 at the MGM Grand At Foxwoods and will be produced by Dreamcatcher Artist Management and Locomotive Entertainment Group. Filmed in pristine hi-definition, digital 3D, this multi-camera, up-close-and-personal special will find the viewer “visually surrounded and fully immersed" in the concert. Mark Lucas, who recently directed the 3D concert films for Dave Matthews and Kings of Leon, will direct, and Monty Powell, 2009 SESAC Songwriter of the Year and producer, will serve as Musical Director.

Contemporary Christian singer Michael W. Smith responded to the devastation in Haiti the best way he knew how: by writing a song he hopes will motivate listeners to offer a hand — or a dollar.

Smith, with Cindy Morgan and David Mullen, wrote “Come Together Now” on January 15, spurred by the 7.0 earthquake that ravaged the island nation on January 12. Proceeds from the sale of the song are to be donated to Haiti relief efforts. (The song will be made available digitally, but details for sale and distribution have yet to be finalized.)

By Wednesday night, the plan had grown to include more than 100 Christian and country artists. The Oak Ridge Boys, Point of Grace, Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman, Lee Greenwood, Brandon Heath, TobyMac, Wynonna, Matt Maher and a host of others poured into Belmont’s Ocean Way Studios to sing with Smith.

“We’re just trying to do our part to come to the aid of this poor nation that so desperately needs our help,” Smith said. “Obviously, it all started with a song, and I thought it might be a draw if we all sang it together. It’s just miraculous it’s all come together in 11 days.”

Coming together

After the song was written, Smith started calling friends to see who would help. One of the first e-mails went to Matt Maher. The internationally known songwriter and worship leader, who toured with Smith in 2009, immediately agreed to fly in from Arizona to lend his voice.

“As a person, I’ve already responded countless times to Haiti relief,” Maher said Wednesday. “I’ve texted (donations to) the Red Cross more times than I can count, and I’ve prayed and prayed and prayed. ... I almost feel like the human race is being presented with an opportunity, through this tragedy, to grow immensely in compassion. ... We need to put faith to action, and that’s why I’m here.”

Steven Curtis Chapman’s reasons for participation were more personal: seeing the living conditions of Haitian orphans inspired the Chapmans to adopt their three youngest daughters.

“This hits so many places that are tender in us,” Chapman said of the earthquake. “It’s something that has immediately caused us to cry out our hearts to God for these people, and this (recording) is one tiny way we can do that and show our love and concern. There’s a whole lot I’m confronted with daily with things I can’t do in a situation like this, and this is the one thing I can do.”

Help and hope

Chapman said he hopes “Come Together Now” offers hope to people who hear it and serves as a reminder for years to come of the devastation and loss the Haitian people have suffered.

“In the days and months to come, don’t forget to care and keep showing that support and love to these people,” he added. “It’s going to take years and years to rebuild their country.”

Smith said that was the songwriters’ goal, too. 

“We’re going to stand by you and hold your arms up,” he said. “I think this is a pretty easy way for people to respond. You buy the song, it’s not that much money. I hope we make millions. Every penny goes to Haiti, and everything has been donated.

“I don’t want to heap guilt on anyone, but there are people out there thinking, ‘Well, that’s just the way it goes,’ ” he said. “That’s not the way it goes. May God give you a conscience. Maybe all this has happened as a wake up call for us to go, ‘What am I doing with my life?’ We have no guarantee of tomorrow.”

It's hard to believe that a decade has gone by.  It seems like only yesterday that we were contemplating whether or not Y2K would happen.  Now, here we are ten years later, and ten years wiser.

Country music as a family is filled with wise people, especially when it comes to entertainers.  Many entertainers have hit the highs as well as the lows.  One entertainer that comes to mind is Wynonna Judd.

I could list all of Ms. Judd's accolades, but there is not enough room.  I will, however, say that Ms. Judd holds the record for the most Spirit Awards won.  Her list of wins include four Entertainer of the Year awards, four Performance of The Year awards, four Female Vocalist of The Year awards, three Best of The Best awards and The President's Choice award. Now, we add "Entertainer of The Decade" to this long list.  

So, what makes Wynonna Judd so popular?  Most fans are still blinded by the fact that Wynonna was the second half of the ever popular duo The Judds.  When they see or hear her they are reminded of the old fashioned country music of the 1980s and 1990s that The Judds are known for.  Or, they are reminded of the made-for-television movie "Love Can Build A Bridge: The Judds Story" where Wynonna was portrayed as a "brat." Is it right to judge a person by their past?

It is my experience that Wynonna is far from what the public perceive her.  She is a multi talented entertainer.  On the outside she is strong, while on the inside she is humble.  A Christian woman with strong values.  But, like anyone, fights her own demons everyday.  She knows what she wants in life and knows she has to work hard to get it.  Her biggest accomplishment in life, are her children.  While the hardest thing in life, for her, is to find true love.  For Wynonna, it's hard to make friends, due to her choice of profession.  However, with friends, she's the life of the party.

Wynonna's love and respect for music spans genres and generations.  She holds the highest respect for her heroes and surrounds her self with heroines.  To Wynonna, music is an outlet.  A way to pour out her heart, soul and hurt caused by daily life.  In her world, music is almost everything. It shows in her live performances.

Her performances are more then just performances.  They are experiences. She performs while she inspires.  Each year she gains more followers and listeners while performing in smaller venues.  However, this is an industry known for success of sell-out large venues.

In the past decade, Wynonna Judd has produced some of the most beautiful music. Her more recent album, Sing: Chapter I, she shares her vast respect for all music.  Where as her 2006 Christmas album, A Classic Christmas, is a shadow of what she can do vocally.  It was her 2005 album, Her Story: Scenes From A Lifetime that gave listeners a glimpse of her vast talent.  In an industry where it's all about the money and not the music, Wynnona's record label, Curb Records, is smart to keep her on.  She holds dear to her heart a lifetime of music yet to come.

At the beginning of this year, all we heard about was who was being named what of the decade.  The more we thought, the more we wanted to honor someone by naming them Entertainer of The Decade.  Only one name came to our minds, Wynonna Judd.  

We don't judge an entertainer by how many albums they record.  We don't judge because of sales or sold out concerts. Where they are on the charts, that doesn't phase us.

We named Wynonna Judd Entertainer of the Decade for one thing - she is the epitome of what and who a true entertainer should be.  She is the same person today, as she was in 2000.  The only difference is, she is just a little wiser.  

If you ever have the chance to see Wynonna Judd live, don't miss it.  Words can not define what truly happens at her performances.  It's a transition that takes place between her soul and yours.

Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock and are among more than 100 volunteers from the worlds of music, television and film scheduled to appear during Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, a two-hour telethon airing Friday (Jan. 22) at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT and dozens of other media outlets internationally. The event will raise money to assist the victims of the earthquake that occurred on Jan. 12.

Swift will appear in Los Angeles, where Urban, Crow and Kid Rock will offer a special group performance. Others performing in Los Angeles include Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder. Performing in New York are Wyclef Jean, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira and Sting. The London lineup features Coldplay and a group performance by Bono, the Edge, Jay-Z and Rihanna.

All musical performances will be available for purchase for 99 cents per song through the Apple iTunes store beginning Saturday (Jan. 23). All proceeds will benefit relief funds managed by Hope for Haiti Now charities.

The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and United Nations World Food Programme have joined the list of relief organizations that will benefit from Hope for Haiti Now. The list also includes Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF and Yele Haiti Foundation. Proceeds from the telethon will be split evenly among each organization's individual funds for Haiti earthquake relief.

In addition to a report during the telethon from CNN's Anderson Cooper in Haiti, presenters and speakers in Los Angeles will include Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt, Chris Rock, Drew Barrymore, George Clooney, Halle Berry, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey and Samuel L. Jackson. Jon Stewart and former President Bill Clinton will be featured in New York, and Robert Pattinson will appear in London.

Hope for Haiti Now will be the most widely-distributed telethon in history, both internationally and across all media platforms. The telethon will air on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, BET, The CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT, along PBS, TNT, Showtime, Comedy Central, Bravo, E! Entertainment, the National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, G4, CENTRIC, Current TV, Fuse, MLB Network, EPIX, Palladia, SoapNet, Style, Discovery Health and Planet Green. Christian humanitarian agency World Vision plans to begin assessing damage and preparing a relief response today after the major earthquake that hit Haiti Tuesday. The agency has worked in Haiti for 30 years and has some 370 staff in country.

Downed communications, blocked roads and continuing aftershocks slowed relief efforts overnight, with staff unable to leave the agency’s Port-au-Prince office for several hours due to fallen debris in the roadways.

"It felt as if a truck had hit a wall," said World Vision staffer Magalie Boyer, of the initial tremor. "There is extensive damage in the city. People are getting ready to spend the night in the streets. They are not comfortable staying in their houses."

"World Vision Haiti will distribute first aid kits to survivors, along with basic materials such as soap, blankets, clothes and bottles of water as an initial response," Boyer added.

Meanwhile, World Vision staff from less affected regions of Haiti are mobilizing and the agency’s global experts are expected to arrive in the disaster zone as soon as possible. Crystal Penner, a World Vision aid worker, was in the central plateau region of Haiti when the quake hit: “There are relief goods prepositioned in various locations across the country, though the challenge will be getting those supplies swiftly to those in need,” she said.

“We would be very concerned about a quake of this magnitude anywhere in the world, but it is especially devastating in Haiti, where people are acutely vulnerable because of poor infrastructure and extreme poverty,” said Edward Brown, World Vision’s relief director in the United States.

Reaching hard-hit areas with supplies is expected to be a significant challenge due to damaged roads and infrastructure, including the main airport and government buildings.

Despite being on her third Christmas tour, Wynonna Judd doesn't really consider herself a "Christmas person." She chalks it up in part to her hardscrabble upbringing. 

GAC (Great American Country) joined Wynonna Judd and her children – with Santa – aboard The Santa Train on November 21st. The Santa Train made 14 stops between Pikeville, KY and Kingsport, TN, twisting through the Appalachian Mountains. Join host Suzanne Alexander and Wynonna for an inside look at how 15 TONS of gifts and food were distributed in one day to the needy families in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. The special airs Dec. 12 through Dec. 25 on GAC.

Wynonna’s “Holiday Notes From Home: A Christmas Tribute for the Troops” is scheduled to air again this holiday season. Watch as she performs alongside the Air Force Reserve Band with The Air Force Strings. The program also features a rare televised appearance by Naomi Judd and the Palmetto State Quartet.

Wynonna continues her 3rd annual Christmas tour over the next two weeks in support of her critically acclaimed Top 10 Billboard Country album, A Classic Christmas, which not only garnered rave reviews, but alsoawarded her a second Top 10 Billboard Christmas single.

On both the tour and “Holiday Notes from Home” Wynonna delivers powerful renditions of traditional holiday classics like “White Christmas” and “Winter Wonderland” and her awe-inspiring version of “Ave Maria” making this an extraordinary performance for the entire family. Wynonna combines her smooth vocals and tremendous live presence in an unforgettable performance that will warm the heart and inspire the spirit.

Wynonna will perform on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” this Tuesday, November 24 (check local listings). Oprah teamed up with People magazine and together they held a private celebration on the Ft. Bragg military base to welcome home the 82nd Airborne Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team returning from Iraq. As part of an action-packed hour of celebration, Wynonna and the Palmetto State Quartet gave a surprise welcome home performance, saluting the well-deserving troops and their families.
